A Fine profusely carved 19th Century Deadbeat Ship Automaton 8 Day longcase Clock by William Young of Edinburgh.

Reputedly purchased from Cammo House six miles north of Edinburgh where it was in situ for many years before being sold in the 1950’s before the estates demise and demolition.

William Young is listed as working Perth, Dundee & Edinburgh in the 19th Century and was noted for using the highest quality of cases for his movements, this clock is no exception...

Standing a monumental 8 feet 3 inches high (approximate).

Broken Swan neck pediment, with three original finials above rope twist columns and cornice, original bevelled glass door revealing the Deadbeat, gong striking movement with 12” x 18” Brass Dial and silvered chapter ring, signed W.Young - Edinburgh and having two silvered subsidiary dials for Calendar and seconds, to the arch is the working Brass and Copper Galleon Ship Automaton set within a superb chased and repoussed coastal scene, original cherub-head spandrels with fine detailing to the centre dial.

Intricate carvings to the hood depict floral vines and three large birds of paradise to each side.

The trunk again fully carved with Monkeys and Birds of paradise to the sides amongst floral vines, flanked by full rope twist columns and carved corinthian capitals with a 85cm x 13cm bevelled glass door, original dome topped brass weights with six spoke pulleys, wooden rod pendulum with a 17cm Brass bob.

The lower case depicts Lord Shiva carved into the waist moulding, below is a pierced base upon sweeping ogee feet which depicts his daughter, Manasa to the centre holding aloft a snake in each hand.

Manasa was an Indian Goddess, the Goddess of Snakes, she was noted as being kind to her devotees, but harsh to people who refused to worship her.

In superb working order with original keys to the movement and door.
