Study of a African head: Red, black and white chalk.
Taken from Charles De Lafosse’s master ‘Adoration of the Magi' now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, (see images above)
There is an example of this held at the British Museum (Number 1854,0628.66) which was long regarded as by Watteau until Jean-Pierre Cuzin's article in 1981 where he pointed out that the present drawing was related to the head of the African servant and its companion to his master in Lafosse's late painting, the 'Adoration of the Magi'.
Aside from two British Museum drawings for the canvas there is a compositional study in a private Portuguese collection and a copy after the present drawing was with the Galerie Éric Coatalem in Paris (Gomez 2006, II, no. D.R. 22).
The picture is framed in a Later frame.
Condition: Generally good with small loss to top right hand corner and a left to right fold lower.
** you can see from the last images above the one held at the British Museum and also that where this study is superimposed over that of the one in the British Museum
